Chapter 4 of Soloist is up, and wow, look who's here, it's the other characters of the hit anime Yuri!!! on Ice! Featuring: little Yuuri, grown-up Yuuri, Yuuri's mom, Victor flopping around in his baffling lovesick way, and a Celestino who isn't just on TV. This is the last chapter! It's complete! (Here's the link to chapter 1 again.)

Given that this is mostly backstory, I think it probably works without canon knowledge, though it gives away the twist of the show.

Normally when I announce a fic over here I include some thoughts about the process of writing it, but this one is honestly just too big. I know 30k isn't a novel, but I'm a fan-creature of small outputs, so it's fully half of all the words I've ever posted to AO3; and I've been thinking about it for a long time. If I were to write a post like that it would have to include:

  • seeing dance performances that matter to you but you can't explain why
  • celibate characters who live solidly in the body and aren't monks or ascetics or something
  • what does it mean to move "like a woman" in a pre-choreographed figure skating program?
  • why is this a soulmate AU at all, why isn't it just about an unmarried and/or asexual and/or aromantic person
  • the way you fill up a living space that has one person in it
  • the thing I read that I hoped would teach me about life for women in Tokyo but ended up just being an analysis of Lost in Translation
  • deleting one hundred instances of the word "just"
  • tracking down food from home when you're living abroad
  • the Pacific Standard artisanal toast story and how I think about it every day
  • listening to this playlist on repeat, lest this strike anyone as a sad story

So do feel free to come round if you want to chat about any of those things.

I clicked "post" on a new work on the AO3 today, largely because I couldn't come up with a good reason to put it off any longer, but it feels like a kinda buckwild* thing to have done. I've gotten very accustomed to posting fic for Yuletide, where the questions after posting are: did the recipient read it and leave a comment; did anybody else read it and go "hey, it's cool that somebody wrote a fic for this canon"; if so, success. Posting without an exchange framework feels entirely different. One is supposed to promote one's work, I think; but I don't know where, in a huge fandom that's preoccupied with its OTP, to promote an introspective genfic that takes place over about forty years. Maybe you, my Dreamwidth friends, would like to read it! I have already imposed on [personal profile] chestnut_pod and [personal profile] zaelle  to not only read it but give me advice about it, and that was exceedingly gratifying.

In any case, it's going to have four chapters, and this is the first. Eventually some elements of canon will appear, but for now there's one main canonical character and a lot of OCs, along with a fandom trope I had a lot of thoughts about, and it's about solitude and community and art.

Chapters: 1/4
Fandom: Yuri!!! on Ice (Anime)

Summary:

There are a lot of reasons why a child might not have a soulmark. It might be a simple issue of irregular skin pigmentation, or the mark might arrive late. Or the child might have another kind of soulmate. Usually these things work themselves out.

In the meantime, for Minako at least, there’s ballet.

*Me to [personal profile] epershand last month: "I'm not super clear how much 'buckwild' is a thing people other than the McElroys say. I mean, it's in Hamilton, but that's not really evidence one way or the other."
[personal profile] epershand: "It's real, and there's only one McElroy reference in Hamilton. If there were multiple references that would just be ridiculous."
