I clicked "post" on a new work on the AO3 today, largely because I couldn't come up with a good reason to put it off any longer, but it feels like a kinda buckwild* thing to have done. I've gotten very accustomed to posting fic for Yuletide, where the questions after posting are: did the recipient read it and leave a comment; did anybody else read it and go "hey, it's cool that somebody wrote a fic for this canon"; if so, success. Posting without an exchange framework feels entirely different. One is supposed to promote one's work, I think; but I don't know where, in a huge fandom that's preoccupied with its OTP, to promote an introspective genfic that takes place over about forty years. Maybe you, my Dreamwidth friends, would like to read it! I have already imposed on [personal profile] chestnut_pod and [personal profile] zaelle  to not only read it but give me advice about it, and that was exceedingly gratifying.

In any case, it's going to have four chapters, and this is the first. Eventually some elements of canon will appear, but for now there's one main canonical character and a lot of OCs, along with a fandom trope I had a lot of thoughts about, and it's about solitude and community and art.

Soloist (7678 words) by Eccentric_Hat
Chapters: 1/4
Fandom: Yuri!!! on Ice (Anime)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Okukawa Minako, Original Characters, Katsuki Yuuri, Victor Nikiforov, Celestino Cialdini, Katsuki Yuuri's Family
Additional Tags: Ballet, Alternate Universe - Soulmates, Trope Subversion, Backstory, Travel, adventures in various world cities
Summary:

There are a lot of reasons why a child might not have a soulmark. It might be a simple issue of irregular skin pigmentation, or the mark might arrive late. Or the child might have another kind of soulmate. Usually these things work themselves out.

In the meantime, for Minako at least, there’s ballet.

*Me to [personal profile] epershand last month: "I'm not super clear how much 'buckwild' is a thing people other than the McElroys say. I mean, it's in Hamilton, but that's not really evidence one way or the other."
[personal profile] epershand: "It's real, and there's only one McElroy reference in Hamilton. If there were multiple references that would just be ridiculous."
