[personal profile] morbane posting in [community profile] jukebox_fest
Here is the sign-up form. Welcome to this year's challenge! Sign-ups will close at 11:59pm EDT, Saturday 9 May.

You can request 3-10 canons, and offer 3-10 canons. If a canon doesn't appear in the drop-down menu when you go to enter it, you can copy and paste it from the tag set and press enter.

Each of your requests and offers must be tagged with 1-3 of the labels "Fanfiction", "Podfic", and "Fanart".

Your requests have a space for optional details. Go ahead and use them to talk about how you understand the song and what kind of art/fic/podfic you might like. However, your gift creator doesn't have to follow your prompts. They do have to respect clear and specific Do-Not-Wants listed in the sign-up (like "no pregnancy" "no scat" "no rainbows").

If you are requesting Podficcer's Choice of Fandom, it's up to a podfic artist what work they choose to record, though you are welcome to include likes and DNWs to inspire their choice.

Your requests have a space for a letter link, if you want to provide one. This link must be included before sign-ups are closed. If you are writing a letter, please have it complete and unlocked by the end of 13 May.

Opting in to treats: Please state if your AO3 preferences are set to allow you to receive treats or if you have this setting disabled. Include a statement in your optional details like Treats welcome or I have opted in to treats (or Treats disabled if true).

Podfic offering options

If you are offering podfic for a song or music video in the tag set, you are pledging to create both text and recording (500-5000 words). You are welcome to team up with a friend to create a work, whether you're the recording artist or the writer, but if that's what you intend, please contact us at jukebox.mod@gmail.com to let us know of the arrangement and to provide a contact email for your friend.

If you are offering podfic in combination with "Podficcer's Choice of Fandom", you are pledging to create a recording of a pre-existing song/MV fanwork, using your recipient's DNWs and general likes as guidance for your choice of fanwork. If this is the only thing you wish to match on, please say so in the Notes to Mods field so we don't accidentally send you a request where you have to write a story as well. Please make sure we can get in contact with you - ie, do you use the email account associated with your AO3 account? If not, please email us directly (jukebox.mod@gmail.com).

Notes to Mod in Offers

These are confidential notes where you can tell the mods (Minutia_R and Morbane) if you want to match in specific ways - for example, if you want to match on one request more than the others, or want to be assigned a recipient who has a letter. If you are a podfic artist who has to offer 3 fandoms but only wants to match on Podficcer's Choice of Fandom, please use Notes to Mods to say so. (Please don't tell us things like "I will not create anything in my DNWs" - if required to closely compare your own preferences and your potential recipients' preferences, we may miss something. Specific names, or anything we can quickly check, are fine.)

In recent years, AO3 has implemented a blocking feature - see AO3 news posts here, here, and here. This does not affect challenge matching, ie, someone you've blocked can still match to you. So if you have another participant blocked or they have blocked you, please use your offers and requests, your notes to mods, or both, to help us help you avoid interactions with them.

You can comment here or contact us at jukebox.mod@gmail.com if you have any questions about signing up.

Again, welcome!!

NB: Normally, we get the reference tables of all songs & music videos & lyrics up just before sign-ups. Unfortunately, I'm a little behind this year, so that will go up during the sign-up period. If you nominated, your links are still very welcome at this post and will help us complete the tables.

Catholic church question, early 1700s

I'm (still) writing a fantasy story set in early 18th century Venice, and there's several scenes of the main character and her family attending Mass or otherwise being inside their church. It's not a big cathedral, more like a well-attended neighborhood church.

My question is probably very stupid but where the heck do the men put their hats while attending Mass or whatever else they're in there for? Do they just like, put their hats beside themselves on their seats? Or just hold onto them on their laps or some other way? Or would your average 18th century Catholic church have a sort of coat room or somesuch? My google-fu is failing in finding a church layout from that time period or text explanation, though I did find a good article about priests wearing wigs...

This is a punch-in-the-stomach poem about marriage and is maybe not exactly in keeping with the extremely nice vacation weekend I have run away to the woods to have with my wonderful wife. But also I really love this poem and have wanted to post it all month, so. To me this is still a love poem, in its way.

Sadly, my experience with libraries at that time was just wandering the stacks and taking out interesting books. I vaguely remember using a microfiche once, for example, and all I remember is you have to turn the knob the opposite direction of what you're viewing. Research is a foreign land to me.

The googling I've done tells me that this year was smack dab in the middle of converting to computer use from old style card catalogues, etc. but no information on how a person goes about doing research. I would love to have a helpful librarian character too.

This is for an exchange fic so I'm putting the rest under a cut. Please don't click if you requested a canon set in the 80s in a current exchange. Thank you. Read more... )

Any help in how this would work or a website that has this research finding information would be very appreciated.

Edited to Add: Thanks for the suggestions so far but I actually need to have my character do some research beyond phone books for the story to work. What I'm getting is libraries might still? be using card catalogues rather than early computers but how would magazines and trade journals be listed in the card catalogue so that a specific company could be researched? Thank you for any suggestions. They do spark my imagination for adding to the scene.

ETA2: Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. I have what I need now. This community is a great resource.

last contract, radiant star

Porting a pair of book reviews over from Bluesky:

Fonda Lee's Last Contract of Isako is terraforming cyberpunk. It's also a samurai movie in book form--directly, rather than in the secondhand way you'd get by riffing on cyberpunk without knowing the sources. Last Contract of Isako is thinking through what it means to have a moral code--an unrelenting and in some ways horrifying code--in service to someone who has no ethics at all. It comes down more or less on the side that some ethics are better than none, which is refreshing when you're used to grimdark, or real-world nihilism. It's also tremendously tightly plotted, in that way where as a reader you know one thing will happen but aren't ready for the sudden unfurling of ramifications!

Last Contract pairs well with Ann Leckie's Radiant Star, in the sense that both are portraits of people who are fucking things up for deeply embedded cultural reasons. Though the book I think you should read Radiant Star against is Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. Leckie loves point of view experiments, and Radiant Star is experimenting with an opinionated nineteenth-century style narrator who can dip in and out of other points of view.

Like Jonathan Strange, Radiant Star is particularly interested in the ways that social stratification of various kinds leads people to ignore the knowledge of those they think are inferior, at great peril. When the narrator of Radiant Star comments that a decision is really very understandable, it is about to become a giant clusterfuck, and this becomes funnier and funnier (and scarier and scarier) as the book goes on. You can read most of Radiant Star with general awareness of Ancillary Justice, but the end will be most satisfying if you remember the events of Ancillary Mercy (it's close in time to that book, though places & characters don't repeat).

I requested both of these books from Netgalley, and I'm very glad I did.

I read more than one book in April, but I think I only have a full review in me of Francis Spufford's Nonesuch, the first half of an urban fantasy duology set in WWII England during the Blitz. I like and admire Spufford's prose a great deal and am always hoping that his next book will be the book that I find fully realized in its invariably complex project; unfortunately, if I were to graph the trajectory of my reactions to his writing across time-of-publication, it would look like... um, honestly, a steadily downward trend for "percentage of thematic and dramatic intention actually executed on," although a more seasick up and down for "how much my personal shit X title was," with spikes for Golden Hill and Cahokia Jazz and a mighty trough on Light Perpetual.

Hi everyone, this is a reminder that assignments are due in (as of this post) 46 hours on Saturday, April 25 @ 11:59pm Eastern Daylight time (Countdown).

As we come up on the deadline, check your email inbox in case we have sent you a query!

  • Do not put de-anonymizing information in your fic or author's notes (e.g., links to social media) until after the anon period is over.

  • Treats that do not fit any recipient's request may be posted to the collection without a recipient.

  • Go to the collection's page on AO3, click on "My Assignment", click "Fulfill", and paste in your fic.

  • If, for whatever reason, you feel you cannot fulfill your assignment by the deadline, you may default instead.

Sixteen Ways to Defend a Walled City

In March the single book I finished was Sixteen Ways to Defend a Walled City, by K. J. Parker, one of many popular and successful fantasy authors working today that I had never heard of until G mentioned him. I like 1) low- or no-magic pre-modern historical fantasy 2) snarky narrators if I find them genuinely funny, so I was immediately curious about the premise: Orhan, a Colonel of Engineers from the fantasy underclass of "milkfaces"--a significant minority of light-skinned people (mostly war slaves or poor freedmen) in the Robur Empire, which is just mumblemumble handwaved Byzantium except with a very dark-skinned, racially homogenous elite, resented as "blueskins" in their turn--finds himself the highest surviving authority in the capital after a well-planned ambush wipes out the Imperial garrison, and has to lead the defense of the city during a protracted siege as they wait for rescue by the navy.

So mostly these days I am obsessed with The Pitt! I love the show so much, for itself, and because it's such a natural successor to MASH and other shows I have loved. I've said on Bluesky that it's the only show I've ever come across that really understands how teaching and growth and mentoring happen in a professional environment - fandom is full of academia stories, and indeed academics, and school and high school stories, but not so much the grown-up, affirming, important work of teaching someone to do your job because you, they and the job all matter. (What do I teach people to do! Not save lives. But it matters. I had a lovely, lovely email from one of my team before she went off on maternity leave that said wonderful things about my teaching, about what she'd learned from me, how her practice had changed as a result of me, at which point I had to go and lie down and cry for a while. When Robby says with emphasis, "This is a teaching hospital", it makes me think of it.

(Brief outline: Robby, otherwise Dr Michael Robinavitch, is a warm, scathing, compassionate soul who runs an emergency department in Pittsburgh, it's an ensemble cast of interns, resident doctors, patients, nurses and others and Robby is the keystone of it all in a tired, mentally ill kind of a way. Each episode of the show covers an hour, so the entire season covers a single shift. It's very good. Also Robby is played by Noah Wyle - and, as the show's executive producers lost a litigation against the IP-holders for ER, he is emphatically not John Carter. I love this. Robby feels, and is, beautifully imagined: a working-class Jewish man, who wears a magen David necklace, all because Carter was a WASP with a trust fund.)

I also love Trinity Santos, a brilliant lovely Filipina asshole of a lesbian, and Jack Abbot, who is Robby's friend and also mirror image - being to the night shift what Robby is the day - and also fascinating for himself. He's a former MASH combat medic which is what decided me for sure that the show deliberately draws on its predecessor. The Pitt isn't a sitcom, but it has the warmth MASH had; and Abbot, who is a lower-leg amputee, embodies some of its ambivalence. (And! In s2 they have someone deliver Henry Blake's "young men die" speech, with the same blocking as the original. I love it.)

Anyway I love this show. It is so rich and funny and so fucking human, all the damn time. Robby's PTSD is from covid, and his nightmares are of full PPE - and I was like, okay, do I want to watch this. Robby has PTSD from treating covid patients but my dad died from treating covid patients. But I did want to watch it, because it takes what it does seriously. I want to write a fic, about Robby and s2 spoiler ), and I also want it to be a daemon AU, because I am insane. I haven't written anything good in a year and like I said I am insane. Maybe I should just ask people to give me fic prompts.

Thank you for all your nominations at the tag set and thank you particularly for coming back to provide links to sources and lyrics to us after nominating on AO3.

Nominations for this year will close 11:59pm EDT, Saturday 25 April.

Now that we've set up the collection, we wanted to highlight an additional guideline:
In the past, we've received nominations for videos that are dominated by silence or dialogue. Since this is a music-focused event, we suggest you discuss music video nominations with mods if they have significant parts without music. We are likely to reject nominations for music videos where less than half of the video contains music, or where any non-musical parts would make a significant difference to the narrative of the video if excluded.

Further minor query: We've approved 'Daisy Bell - IBM 7094 and Hatsune Miku (Song)' in the past, but it seems a little odd to format IBM 7094 as an artist. 'Would Daisy Bell - Hatsune Miku ft. IBM 7094' work?
