Me: I'm going to write some fic. Just like, collect some prompts, write some random scenes, keep it loose. I might or might not want to eventually post it, I just like these characters and this fandom seems like a nice playground.
Character: Hey thanks! I suddenly have a specialized career and a long personal history in a location that barely if ever appears in canon! I also have some vague regrets. Also, what language(s) do I even speak, you'd better open up that can of worms because the canon sure doesn't.
Me: Sounds great, but I was actually going to try to write something for a ship this time.
Character: No problem. Everything I just said is true of both of us, but we both have different careers, come from different places, and have different regrets. The person you want to pair me with actually has regrets about the future! Have fun figuring that out!
Me: You know what, I actually will.

I laugh at myself but it honestly is a fun and interesting little project, angst and all!
