Jan. 3rd, 2020 07:34 pmOh, right, Yuletide reveals.
I received a fic about The Myriad from The Raven Tower, and it's very clever and has a great, sharp narrative voice:
I also got a drabble about Lady No-Kids from a one-panel cartoon, a little Popsicle of a fic:
So that was lovely. I have to say, I've been so lucky with Yuletide gifts; in November and early December I always get stressed about writing and wonder whether I should have signed up, and then I always (so far) get my story in on time and get something in return that I hadn't even known I wanted, and it's a beautiful thing.
I wrote a fic for Seanan McGuire's Wayward Children series, chiefly drawing on the first two books:
I had a tricky time getting to the heart of this story. Seanan McGuire has a habit of saying what she means, in such a way that it isn't obvious where fanfic can slip into the gaps. I like Jack very much, but the chief things I don't know about her are very likely to be revealed in the book coming out in a couple months. So it helped to place the point of view in Kade, who has much less of a fleshed-out backstory and hasn't been a POV character in canon yet. Kade reminds me of a friend of mine, and writing this story felt a little like coming to understand something that friend said to me years ago about relating to places. It's also a story about stories, because that's what Every Heart a Doorway is and that's what mad-scientist lairs and enchanted fairylands have in common.
I might post some recs in a little bit--I had a really nice, low-key time of reading this Yuletide, perhaps because there were so many fandoms I didn't know that the fic for ones I did know felt very manageable. Either way, this exchange continues to stress me out but prove itself worth it in the lazy days of post-Christmas reading.
